HARARE – Tributes continue to pour in for former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak, who has died at the age of 49 after battling liver and colon cancer.
The legendary Zimbabwean all-rounder played in 65 Tests for Zimbabwe, taking 216 wickets, and 189 one-day internationals, in which he took 239 wickets.
“Heavens bowling attack was bolstered 10 fold by a giant of a man with the most generous and caring soul,” former Zimbabwe rugby star Jan Ferreira posted on Facebook.
Added the e-Sables lock Ferreira: “I will miss Streaky and I will always cherish what I learnt from the legend himself. I often had to pinch myself in his presence as he was a role model to me and all those around. May the many happy memories bring his friends and family comfort in these dark days.”
Henry Olonga, Streak’s friend from childhood and ex-Zimbabwe fast bowling partner, also expressed his sorrow.
“Our deepest condolences to you Nadine Streak and family,” Olonga wrote. “And to all who had the pleasure to be influenced and inspired by Heath.”
On Twitter, ex-Zimbabwe all-rounder Solomon Mire, who was coached by Streak, posted:
“Thanks a lot for everything you did for me personally and the wider game of cricket. You will be missed. 💔💔 RIP Streaky.”
Some of the world’s most renowned ex-internationals to pay their respects include: Kumar Sangakkara, Yuvraj Singh, VVS Laxman, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Virender Sehwag, Mohammad Hafeez, Sanath Jayasuriya, Anil Kumble, Gautam Gambhir.
