HARARE – There seems no stopping Edward Sigauke.
Following a splendid 2024 international season with Zimbabwe’s national rugby team, the 20-year-old explosive winger has started the new year in style with Varsity College in South Africa, where he is now studying and playing in the Varsity Shield competition.
The Varsity Shield is a league below the top-flight Varsity Cup in South Africa’s very competitive university rugby system.
Sigauke scored a brace of tries last Friday in Varsity College’s 43-36 win over Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, prompting a Facebook post by Varsity Rugby this Thursday, complete with a video clip of one of the tries: “Edward Sigauke vs 4 defenders collecting ankles for fun. The Varsity College Rugby Club winger had another great game scoring a brace against FNB SPU.
“#NxtLevel #RugbyThatRocks.”
The post drew a reaction from Sigauke’s international colleague, centre Brandon Mudzekenyedzi, who commented tongue-in-cheek.
“This video is clearly sped up, there’s no way someone moves that fast. Please do better!” quipped Mudzekenyedzi.
Sigauke and fellow speedster Mudzekenyedzi were key members of Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup-winning squad in Uganda last July, before going on to help the Sables win both Tests against the United Arab Emirates and South Korea on an end-of-year tour.
27-year-old Mudzekenyedzi has recently signed for South Korean side OKMan Rugby Club after he caught the eye on the Asian leg of that tour in November.
