HARARE – Liverpool and Zimbabwe legendary goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has made a surprise appearance at a Fifa training programme in his homeland on Wednesday afternoon, stirring speculation that he could be the country’s next national team coach.
66-year-old Liverpool great Grobbelaar – who began his footballing career in his Zimbabwean hometown of Bulawayo with Highlanders FC five decades ago – went on to win six league titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups, and a European Cup – this success coming with the Reds between 1981 and 1994.
Durban-born Grobbelaar earned 32 international caps for Zimbabwe between 1980 and 1998.
During a Fifa Football For School Programme at Harare’s famed Prince Edward School on Wednesday, Grobbelaar freely mingled with aspiring coaches and officials after arriving announced.
He wore a Liverpool golf t-shirt and khaki cotton chinos, showing his undying love for the English Premiership giants and six times European champions.

Zimbabwe is on the lookout for a new coach in time for the resumption of World Cup qualifiers in June.
Grobbelaar, who was seen with officials of Zimbabwe’s football federation at the Harare event, has made it known that he would like to be his country’s substantive head coach one day.
He has previously coached Zimbabwe on caretaker basis in 1997 and 1998.
