HARARE – Rugby Africa treasurer and former Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) president Aaron Jani has passed away on Wednesday at the age of 51 following a long battle with illness.
Jani, a former national team player, was first elected ZRU president in 2017 and successfully secured another term in 2021.
Last year, Jani belatedly announced he was seeking re-election, but lost to his deputy Losson Mtongwiza. Jani came close in second place in a four-man contest, losing to Mtongwiza by just one vote at the ZRU’s elective AGM in Harare in May 2024.
“It is with profound sadness that the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) and the rugby community mourn the loss of our esteemed former President, Aaron Jani,” said the ZRU in a statement Wednesday evening.
“Aaron was a towering figure in our sport—a leader, a visionary, and a passionate advocate for rugby in Zimbabwe and beyond. Jani was a Sable, living for the game, and his passing marks one of the saddest days in Zimbabwe Rugby. His unwavering dedication during his tenure as ZRU President brought stability, growth, and pride to our community, leaving an indelible mark on the Sables, junior rugby, and women’s rugby development.
“On behalf of the entire ZRU family, we extend our deepest sympathies to Aaron’s loved ones during this difficult time. His legacy will forever inspire us as we continue to build on the foundation he so tirelessly strengthened.
“Rest in peace, Aaron—your spirit will always be part of Zimbabwean rugby. With heartfelt condolences.”
Jani, who was born in Chinhoyi and grew up in Bulawayo, would have turned 55 on 10 March.
He was the treasurer for the continent’s rugby confederation at the time of his death, serving on the body’s executive committee since March 2023.
