HARARE – Amidst record cold temperatures across Zimbabwe this week, retired American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr will land in the capital city Harare on Wednesday evening at 10pm at the invitation of gold dealer-cum-politician Pedzisayi “Scott” Sakupwanya, organised by a jewellery company called Betterbrands.
46-year-old Mayweather – who retired with an undefeated record and won 15 major world championships – will make a celebrity appearance in Harare’s black township of Mabvuku on Thursday, where the youthful Sakupwanya is vying for a Parliamentary seat in general elections set for 23 August.
Mayweather will exhibit his training routine in Mabvuku, leading to the handover of a boxing ring to be used by budding boxers in the area and surroundings.
The American boxing great will arrive in Mabvuku around 2pm, but local organisers say “proceedings” would have commenced earlier in the day at 10am.
A VIP event at the five-star Meikles Hotel in the capital will then be hosted later in the evening, dubbed “The Talk with Floyd Mayweather.”
