JAMMEL, Tunisia – Zimbabwe are through to the quarter-finals of the main competition at the Africa Women’s Sevens following the end of day one here on Friday.
The Lady Cheetahs survived a big scare in against Senegal in a must-win match, eventually prevailing 14-12 in a tightly contested tie.
In their second match of the day against neighbours South Africa, the Zimbabweans played a direct and physical game, trying hard to counter the Blitzbok women’s ball-playing ability.
But it didn’t pay off well in the end and South Africa won comfortably 15-0 courtesy of three tries.
The two Southern African sides advance to the last eight.
The 16 teams in Tunisia are vying for two places at September’s women section of the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town. South Africa, who will host, automatically qualifies for the global event.
