HARARE – Zimbabwe has announced shortlisting Africa Cup of Nations-winning Winfried Schäfer for the country’s coaching job, alongside four others.

74-year-old German Schäfer – who guided Cameroon to the 2002 Afcon title – is favourite to land the Warriors post.

Spaniard Gerard Nus, 35 years Schäfer’s junior, is the youngest to have applied for the job. Nus is currently an assistant coach for Greece’s national team.

Others on the shortlist are Germany’s Michael Nees and Antoine Hey as well as Brazilian Márcio Máximo.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) said the five had been interviewed the previous day.

It reads: “The second round of interviews is scheduled to take place over the next few days, ensuring a thorough evaluation of each candidate’s qualifications, vision, and ability to lead our national team to new heights.”
