HARARE – South African football club SuperSport United has dispelled rumours that wealthy Zimbabwean tycoon Strive Masiyiwa (pictured) is on the verge of buying the Pretoria-based team.

SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews confirmed the club wasn’t on sale.

“It’s very frustrating to read in the media that the club is for sale. It’s so disappointing. It’s a misinformed and irresponsible journalism to report that the club is for sale when it’s not. The club isn’t for sale,” said Matthews at a press conference to announce the return of Gavin Hunt as coach of the club.

Reports of London-based Masiyiwa’s interests in SuperSport United spread widely across the sporting world this week, although the origins of the rumour isn’t clear.

Billionaire Masiyiwa’s previously best known involvement with sport was when his company Econet sponsored Zimbabwe’s top-flight football league, before terminating the deal in controversial circumstances.

Econet is also involved partly in other sporting disciplines like rugby, cricket and athletics.
